Last of a Golden Generation

Updated: May 7

Belgium's national team has been very impressive in recent years, filled with talent from top European clubs. Heading into the Euros, after the firing of Roberto Martinez and the decline and retirement of top players such as Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, and Tibo Courtois, we are seeing the end of an era in Belgium.

In terms of playing style, Belgium traditionally employs a slow possession-based playstyle, relying on their midfielders to control the tempo of the game. They tend to be patient with a slow buildup and create scoring opportunities through direct passes from players like Kevin De Bruyne. They invert their wingers with Eden Hazard providing flair and unpredictability in attack. This overloads the center providing space in wide areas, allowing Belgium to be formidable going forward.

Defensively, Belgium in the past had a solid foundation, often organized and disciplined at the back. They used to have experienced defenders like Vincent Kompany, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, who provided stability and leadership in defense. However, as time passed, they have declined with age and Belgium has not been able to replace them

In terms of formation, Belgium tends to stick with a 3-4-3 as this formation allows them to make the most of their plethora of central defenders. Additionally, this formation allows them to cover for their lack of fullbacks.

With the sacking of Roberto Martinez, former RB Leipzig manager Domenico Tedesco has now been appointed as head coach of Belgium with the hope that he might be able to introduce new ideas into Belgium’s national team. Tedesco is different from Martinez, where he is more of an attacking minded manager. His Leipzig team played quick short passes with a lot of off ball movement, trying to get numbers forward in order to overload the opposition.

Overall, Belgium's objective in the Euros is clear: to make the most out of what is left in their talented squad and aim to finally lift the trophy. With their golden generation of players reaching the end of their career, there's a sense of urgency and expectation for Belgium to make a serious push for glory on the world stage.
